My name is Arnold Mamuya, also known as Mamuyapro, and I am a modern self-taught artist from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Specializing in portrait drawing, I primarily work with charcoal and graphite pencils to create strikingly detailed pieces. My artistic style, often classified as realism or hyperrealism, focuses on capturing every intricate detail, bringing images to life with a unique blend of human and natural beauty. I have discovered that merging drawings of people with objects allows me to create surreal imagery that speaks to both personal and collective experiences.
I currently work from my home studio in Dar es Salaam, where I continuously push the boundaries of my creative expression. My passion for art began at the age of eight when I was in grade two. Since then, art has become more than just a practice for me—it is an escape into my subconscious, a space where I ask questions and seek my own answers. I see art as a powerful means of introspection and storytelling, allowing me to translate emotions and cultural narratives into visual form.
My work is deeply inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Eastern Africa, particularly Tanzania. I draw influence from the traditions, history, and fashion of ethnic groups such as the Maasai and Hadzabe, incorporating elements of their values, ethics, and aesthetics into my compositions. Through my portraits, I aim to reflect the strength, identity, and resilience of my people.
In 2024, I showcased some of my works in a women-themed exhibition at Rangi Gallery and was among the 18 shortlisted winners for TLM 2023. Later that year, I participated in the Shupavu exhibition, using my art to raise awareness about gender-based violence in a compelling and impactful way.
Beyond my artistic practice, I enjoy reading motivational books, which often serve as a source of inspiration for my work. I also find balance in physical activities such as gym workouts and swimming, which help me maintain both mental and physical well-being.
For me, art is more than just a skill—it is a journey of discovery, expression, and transformation.
